Mapping data and temporal changes in workforce activity in Mining, Quarrying, Oil and Gas Extraction

This post presents maps on Mining, Quarrying, oil and gas extraction work in the Gulf Area Counties. Figure 1 (Map 1), presents the percentages of workforce this activity represented on 2009 for the states of Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi and Florida.

The activities of this sector are concentrated on the Central and North Area of Texas, to a less degree these activities are also found in South Texas and the coast area of Louisiana. The states of Mississippi and Alabama have almost none activities on the sector. Two counties in Central Florida have activities on this job sector. These estimates have some error (as all estimates) these are presented in Figure 1 (Map 2).

Figure 2 presents the percentages the workforce of mining, quarrying, oil and gas extraction are for 2009 (Map 1) and for 2011 (Map 2). The areas of highest concentration remain the same from one year to another. The activity concentrates mainly in Central, North and South Texas and the Coast area of Louisiana. Figure 2 (Map 3) presents the raw change of employees in this sector.

Figure 2: Percentage of Workforce of Mining, Quarrying, oil and gas extraction for 2009-2011

It can be appreciated that a big proportion of the counties in the Gulf States have lost persons in this sector. Areas in east Texas, Northeast Texas and two counties in West Texas have lost employees in this sector. These figures should be evaluated cautiously because of the coefficient of variation presented in Figure 1 (Map 2).
